About Femicide Memorial

Femicide Memorial Platform was created with the aim of raising public awareness about the characteristics and prevalence of femicide, as well as the challenges faced by the families of murdered women, especially their children.

The platform also serves as a publicly available archive and source of data on femicide in Serbia, dating back to 2011. The femicide data is presented in a table containing 12 basic anonymized data points, which protect the personal information of the murdered women and girls, while remaining individualized enough to allow us to remember each of them. The sources include data on femicide regularly collected and published by the Autonomous Women's Center, as well as court verdicts on femicide cases provided to the Center by the Center for Investigative Journalism of Serbia (CINS).

As part of the Memorial, the Autonomous Women's Center’s research and reports on femicide are available, along with public reports and recommendations from the Ombudsman identifying institutional failures, and all initiatives of the Autonomous Women's Center aimed at determining the accountability of institutional representatives in cases of murdered women and girls in Serbia.

The Memorial honors the memory of murdered women and girls by commemorating the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Violence and the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Femicide, encouraging citizens to join appeals for improving the position of children who have lost their mothers to femicide and for establishing a national mechanism for monitoring and analyzing femicide cases in Serbia.

The data on femicide available on the platform is updated and supplemented annually.
